For the last 15 years, I have photographed the spectacular migration of western sandpipers in the spring, near Vancouver. Sadly, this may all come to an end if we don’t protect the birds’ habitat. That’s why I need your help.
Western sandpipers are tiny shorebirds that migrate over 10,000 kilometres north along the Pacific coast of the Americas from their wintering grounds as far south as Peru to their breeding sites in Alaska.
Most of the birds stop on the intertidal mudflats of Roberts Bank in the Fraser River Estuary and Delta in BC. Those mudflats are vitally important, providing one of the last suppers for the sandpipers in their journey north.
Watching migrating sandpipers blanket the exposed mud of Roberts Bank in the spring is one of the most phenomenal spectacles of the natural world.
Tragically, Roberts Bank is under the immediate threat of the federally approved Port of Vancouver’s port expansion project (RBT2), which is predicted by scientists to destroy the mudflat ecosystem that supports the survival of hundreds of thousands of migrating shorebirds and other species including southern resident killer whales and salmon.
We are making a documentary to raise awareness about the ecological value of intertidal mudflats and the URGENCY to save these vital habitats for shorebirds, one of the fastest disappearing groups of birds in the world.
We have partnered with BC Nature and we need your help now to complete the documentary and to support our impact campaign to permanently protect Roberts Bank from the Port expansion. Please consider making a donation to this project and spread the word.
Any and all support is greatly appreciated. Together we can make a difference. Thank you!
