I am very happy to announce that my non fiction book Sea Otters: A Survival Story published by Orca Book Publishers, with foreword by Dame Judi Dench and David Mills, is officially released on April 28 2020!
Drawing from my explorations in sea otter country along the Pacific Coast over a period of ten years, the book looks at the history, biology, behaviour and future of sea otters, their journey from near extinction and how their role as a keystone species is essential to a rich, complex and connected ecosystem, contributing to the overall health of the planet.
Mainly illustrated with my photographs, the book is aimed at children 9 to 12, but can be read by everyone. Sea otters symbolize the large impact — both positive and negative — that humans can have on wildlife, and their story is one of resilience, hope, and positive action that we can all take for the natural world.
I am grateful for the underwater photographs that have been kindly provided by amazing photographers, giving insights into the otters’ world. I could not have written this book without the scientists who have shared their knowledge of sea otters in different communities and invited me to join their field research. I am also delighted that Dame Judi Dench and David Mills have such a keen interest in helping educate young people about the natural world.
The book can be purchased online on Orca Books’ website or any of your favourite bookseller. To learn more about the book, please visit my Books page.
As we are adapting to these extraordinarily difficult times and learning to navigate a new and changing reality, I am transitioning to virtual events and presentations. I believe it is even more important to stay connected and share the things that bring us joy, and I look forward engaging in meaningful dialogues about the book, the amazing things sea otters are doing, and how we can all do our part in protecting the natural world, now more than ever.
Keep updated for latest news, stories, and photos I will be sharing: sign up for my newsletter and follow me on Instagram.
To arrange a virtual talk or event, please contact me. My talks supported by photography and field anecdotes will not only delight and educate students of all ages, but are also relevant to adults who want to make a difference for the natural world.
